Kitagwenda Leaders Fight School Dropout Crisis as Children Turn to Fishing

EDUCATION: IVAN
Schools in Mahyoro Town Council, Kitagwenda District, continue to grapple with high dropout rates as children leave classrooms for fishing activities at nearby landing sites on Lake George. Despite interventions from local leaders and educators, some learners remain reluctant to return to school.
Kitagwenda District, which shares Lake George with three major landing sites Mahyoro, Nyakeera, and Kayinja, has witnessed a worrying trend of children abandoning school for fishing.
To curb this, authorities last year launched a crackdown to remove all children under 18 from the landing sites and encourage them to return to school.
John Vincent Bimbona, the Chairperson of Mahyoro Town Council, acknowledged the efforts made but noted that some children still resist going back to school.
John Tumwijukye, the head teacher Kanyabikyere Primary School near Mahyoro landing site, has resorted to house-to-house mobilization to convince dropouts to return.
Despite the setbacks, local leaders and educators remain committed to the fight against school dropouts. Authorities continue to sensitize communities, while teachers like Tumwijukye go the extra mile to ensure every child gets a chance at education.
