Kitagwenda residents accuse police, agricultural officers over extortion

Residents living near Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kitagwenda District have expressed concern over alleged extortion by police and agricultural officers. These officials reportedly demand bribes to issue reports required for compensation claims from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) when stray animals destroy their gardens.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, residents explained that obtaining a police report or an agricultural officer’s assessment has become an expensive and frustrating ordeal.

In response to the outcry, Kitagwenda District Chairperson Ismail Mushemeza assured residents of swift action. He urged them to report any cases of extortion directly to district authorities.
