Anita Tayebwa Appointed Bahamas Honorary Consul in Uganda

Anita Rukundo Tayebwa, the wife of Thomas Tayebwa, has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in Uganda.

The appointment was announced by Jerusa Léa Ali, Ambassador and Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas.

Ali revealed that the relationship leading to the appointment was established during the 2024 G77 and Non-Aligned Movement summits hosted in Uganda.

“We first met in the margins of G77 & Non-Aligned Movement Summits hosted by Uganda in 2024 and we are now proud to welcome Anita Rukundo Tayebwa as The Bahamas Honorary Consul based in Kampala, Uganda,” Ali posted on X.

The role of an Honorary Consul is largely diplomatic and advisory, with appointees often serving as representatives of foreign nations in countries where establishing a full embassy or consulate may not be feasible.

Unlike career diplomats, honorary consuls are usually respected private citizens who undertake the role alongside their professional engagements.

As Honorary Consul, Anita Tayebwa is expected to support Bahamian nationals in Uganda, promote trade and investment opportunities between the two countries, and help strengthen cultural and diplomatic cooperation.

The position also involves representing The Bahamas at selected official functions and facilitating bilateral engagements.

Uganda and The Bahamas, both members of the Commonwealth of Nations, have in recent years sought to deepen cooperation through multilateral platforms and South-South partnerships.

While trade volumes between the two countries remain limited, officials say there is growing interest in expanding collaboration in areas such as investment, tourism, climate action and cultural exchange.
