Join coffee cooperatives to boost market, Christians urged

IBANDA: FEDNAND

Christians have been sensitized to join coffee associations to boost production and market.

The call was made by Rev Addy Tukesiga during his teaching sermon at St Paul’s cathedral yesterday. Talking about the Ibanda golden coffee cooperative society limited, Tukesiga called upon Christians who have coffee and those who wish to plant the crop to join the association in order to boost their bargaining power during the sale of the crop.

He explained that the diocese of Northwest Ankole has decided to start the cooperative for people to develop together.

Tukesiga said it is essential for all coffee farmers to join cooperatives and market their produce collectively.

He added that there is also a mismatch in information and the linkage between the farmers and the other actors in the coffee sector which he said can only be bridged through farmers working in groups.

According to the man of God, because of the failure by farmers to join cooperatives, they have been cheated by middle men and they lack bargaining power.
