Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and veteran opposition leader, has died at 80. He suffered a cardiac arrest during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic hospital in Kochi, Kerala, India, and was pronounced dead shortly after 9am

Odinga’s family confirmed his death. His brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, described the loss as profound and requested the public to respect the family’s privacy during this period of mourning

Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, was a leading voice for democratic reforms and multiparty politics in the 1990s. His political party, Azimio la Umoja, has played a key role in opposition politics

He had traveled to India in recent weeks for medical treatment. Despite earlier rumors about his health, his family and party had maintained that he was in stable condition prior to his death

Tributes are pouring in from across Kenya and internationally. Odinga is survived by his wife, Ida Odinga, and their children. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
