Agro ecology model village launched in Kitagwenda district

An agro ecology model village has been launched in Ntara sub-county, Kitagwenda district, as part of the Village Agriculture Model initiative.
On August 7, 2025, Community Sustainable Initiatives Link (COSIL) Uganda and Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Uganda launched a national campaign against toxic pesticides in Rugarama Village, Ntara Sub county, Kitagwenda District. The event, which included the unveiling of the Agro ecology Model Village (AMV) Approach, was a collaboration with Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) and regional/national agro ecology stakeholders. The initiative aims to promote agro ecology and petition for a ban on toxic pesticides in Uganda and Africa.
The Agro-Ecological Village Model has been developed to support rural communities through the creation of self reliant, integrated and ecological food and energy systems.
The launch aims to boost agricultural productivity, household incomes, and promote sustainable development.
Speaking during the launch, Allan Byamaka the executive director COSIL said agro ecology model of farming campaign aims at fighting the importation of harmful chemicals to Uganda.
Mikidad Byamukama the LC3 chairperson Ntara said the agro ecology campaign has improved farming and development in the area.
Fred Musinguzi the Kitagwenda district commercial officer commended COSIL for the initiative adding that the districtis already looking for making of the products.
Officiating at the launch, George Bob Sunday the commissioner in charge of agro ecology ministry of agriculture animal industry and fisheries commended COSIL for the initiative. He added that government is drafting policies for the national agro ecology programs as one way of having nutritious local food.
Some of the farmers under the initiative told our reporter that through agro ecology they have been able to have sustainable food and income.
