Africano Arinaitwe, an aspirant for the Kitagwenda County Member of Parliament seat, was on Thursday evening narrowly nominated by the Electoral Commission (EC) after receiving a last-minute clearance from the Ministry of Public Service confirming his resignation from government service.
Arinaitwe, who previously served as an Assistant Education Officer under Kamwenge District Local Government and a teacher at Kamwenge Secondary School, had earlier been denied nomination for failing to present proof of his resignation from public service.
According to the EC, the delay stemmed from his inability to provide official documentation confirming his withdrawal from the teaching service, a requirement for all public servants seeking elective office.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, Arinaitwe returned to the EC offices at around 4:45 p.m. with a confirmation letter from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Service, which validated his resignation.
Speaking to Rwenzori FM shortly after his nomination, a relieved Arinaitwe described the earlier setback as “a deliberate attempt” to frustrate his political ambitions.
He called on his supporters across Kitagwenda to remain steadfast and rally behind his campaign, promising to “champion inclusive development and accountability” once elected.
Confirming the development, Kitagwenda District Election Administrator, Francis Kagoro, said Arinaitwe met all the nomination requirements before the deadline.
