29 ARRESTED FOR KILLING POLICE OFFICER IN IBANDA

Police in Ibanda District are holding 29 individuals in connection with the brutal killing of Police Constable Suleiman Chemonges, 28, during a burial ceremony in Ibanda Municipality.

Constable Chemonges, who was attached to Bisheshe Police Post, met his death on Sunday while on duty providing security at the burial of Lazarus Kahangire, an inmate who died in Nyabuhikye Government Prison.

Kahangire had been on remand facing charges of attempted murder in a land dispute registered under file number IBD CRB 849/2023.

According to the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, SP Samson Kasasira, the constable was deployed as part of routine security arrangements at the burial, which turned chaotic under unclear circumstances. He stated that 29 individuals have so far been arrested whereas still pursuing two individuals who sustained gunshot injuries during the fracas.
