TENSION AND FEAR ENGULFS RESIDENTS OF KYEMBOGO AFTER THE BRUTAL MURDER OF POLICE OFFICER

Tension and fear have engulfed residents of Kyembogo Cell in Kalangala Ward, Bisheshe Division, Ibanda Municipality, following the intensified police operations after the brutal murder of a police officer.
Suleiman Chemonges, 28, who was attached to Bisheshe Police Post, was lynched by a mob on Sunday while on duty providing security at the burial of Lazarus Kahangire, an inmate from Nyabuhikye Government Prison who had died on remand.
Since the incident, the Uganda Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, sparking fear among locals. Some residents have reportedly abandoned their homes and families, fearing arbitrary arrest.
Alex Katuramu, the LC1 Chairperson of Kyembogo Cell, expressed concern about the situation.
According to the residents, the wave of arrests has caused unease in the community, with many worried that innocent individuals may be caught in the dragnet.
Elias Tumuboine, the Vice Chairperson of Ibanda District, acknowledged the rising tension and promised to engage the community.
Godfrey Mbetegyereize, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Ibanda, assured the public that the police are targeting only those with a direct link to the crime.
