Over 350 newly elected NRM MPs, including many first-timers and 40 independents, have gathered at NALI in Kyankwanzi for a seven-day retreat

Members of Parliament-elect from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Uganda have set off for a week-long ideological orientation retreat at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, running from April 7 to April 15, 2026

The retreat, which prepares the legislators for the 12th Parliament, includes returning members, newly elected NRM MPs, and NRM-leaning independent legislators. 

Key details regarding the retreat include:

Focus on Ideology and Strategy: The retreat, under the theme “Aligning the NRM leadership towards protecting the gains and making the qualitative leap towards a higher middle-income status society,” focuses on NRM ideology, “Musevenomics,” regional geopolitics, and national security.

Arrival and Accreditation: Legislators gathered at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala on April 6, 2026, for accreditation, COVID-19 testing, and security checks before travelling to Kyankwanzi.

Participation of Independents: Over 40 NRM-leaning independent MPs were registered to attend after signing memoranda of understanding to cooperate with the party.

Strict Rules: The NRM leadership enforced strict rules for the retreat, including restrictions on the use of personal phones and a ban on alcohol to ensure focus during the training.

Opening and Closing: President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM National Chairman, is scheduled to open and close the retreat, which precedes the swearing-in of the new Parliament. 

The retreat is a key part of the party’s preparation for the new parliamentary term, aiming to foster cohesion and align members with the party’s manifesto.
