Nakivubo cleared for maiden Caf-sanctioned match
The raucous debate about whether the newly refurbished Hamz Stadium Nakivubo will host a Caf-certified match has now been partly settled.
First, the stadium will host the Cecafa regional qualifiers for the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations alongside St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende starting December 14 to 27.
Caf has also cleared the way for the stadium to host Uganda’s double-legged clash of the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) qualifier against Burundi on Boxing Day and December 29.
This was confirmed by Fufa confirmed in a statement.
Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania qualified as joint-hosts but Burundi will need good results against Uganda Cranes to better the other four contestants for the remaining slot for Cecafa. They include Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan and Rwanda.
Among the reasons Caf had given for flagging off Nakivubo were its access roads, which affect the crowd control management protocol. However, for this low-profile second-tier match, Caf has directed a limited number of supporters to attend the match as part of the conditions for granting hosting rights.
