ACTIVISTS CONDEMN DISCRIMINATION OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH DISABILITIES.
As Uganda joins the rest of the world today to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, activists have called for equity, inclusion and non-discrimination.
This year’s annual celebrations are being held in Kumi District under the theme: “Improved Household Income for the Wellbeing of Persons with Disabilities”.
Rwenzorifm sampled some of the persons with disabilities, who expressed mixed reactions about the day’s celebrations as they called for observance of their human rights.
Maria Patricia Natakwa, a digital expert, who is visually-impaired, called upon Ugandans to guard against discriminating against PWDs.
However, she remained determined to challenge the stigma and champion the belief that “disability is not inability.
Eric Kitumba, another visually-impaired person, who is a musician, pianist, composer and performer, lost his vision at three months.
Regardless of his situation, he has been lucky to attain a good education.
Promise Akankunda, who was born with physical disability, said society ought to change the different fallacies they associate with the PWDs.
Dr Naboth Cole, a human rights advocate and a businessman, called upon parents to accord PWDs equal chances of attaining a good education.
Joyce Acan Okeny, a Member of Parliament representing PWDs, when contacted for an interview, called for reflection on the undeniable truth that financial independence is the cornerstone of dignity, opportunity, and security for people with disabilities in Uganda.
