President Yoweri Museveni has bid farewell to outgoing United States Ambassador to Uganda William W. Popp, praising his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between Kampala and Washington during his tour of duty.
Museveni hosted Ambassador Popp at State Lodge Nakasero, where the two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest and ongoing cooperation between Uganda and the United States.
“I received H.E. William W. Popp, the outgoing Ambassador of the United States to Uganda, at State Lodge Nakasero,” Museveni said.
“I thank Ambassador Popp for his service over the past years and for his contribution to strengthening the cordial relations between Uganda and the United States. We discussed matters of mutual interest and cooperation between our two countries.”
The President also wished the diplomat success in his future assignments.
“I wish him good luck in his future assignments and endeavours,” Museveni added.
Ambassador Popp officially assumed office as the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda on September 20, 2023, after presenting his credentials to President Museveni.
He succeeded former U.S. Ambassador Natalie E. Brown, who headed the U.S. Mission in Kampala from 2020 to 2023.
During his tenure, Ambassador Popp oversaw continued cooperation between Uganda and the United States in areas including health, trade, security, governance, education, and development programmes.
His departure marks the end of a diplomatic assignment that lasted nearly three years. In late May 2026, he held farewell engagements with senior government officials, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, as preparations for the conclusion of his mission got underway.
The United States remains one of Uganda’s key development and strategic partners, with the two countries maintaining long standing cooperation in sectors such as public health, security, trade, governance, and humanitarian support.
