72 arrested in Rukungiri during an intelligence led operation

The territorial police in Rukungiri carried out an intelligence led operation where a number of suspected criminals were arrested.

This was in the night of the 07/10/2025 within the Municipality, targeting those who have been terrorizing the township by snatching bags, burglary and thefts, robberies, possession and smoking opium among others.

 According to the Kigezi region police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, a total of 72 people were rounded up mostly from black spot areas and some of whom were found with breaking implements in their possession, ready handed smoking opium and wandering on streets when they can’t account for themselves at those wee hours of the night. 

This morning the 08/10/2025 at about 0940hrs screening was conducted and 26 suspects were charged with various offenses ranging from public nuisance, possession and smoking opium and possession of breaking implements and pending court action.

Relatedly, Kisoro police did also an intelligence led operation since last week up to the 06/10/2025 and a number of people were rounded up and after screening, 20 suspects were held and 8 have already appeared before court ready and others still pending for the same, equally on the same charges mentioned above.

In Kabale, the hunt for the remaining key thugs is still on, so that the four suspects that were arrested over the weekend from Mpigi, Mbarara and Kabale, are all prosecuted at once before courts of law.

These operations will continue in the whole region until after the illegal activities of criminality are minimized.
